Story by Priya Balasubramanian (BBO: dia2911)
Bridge is an unforgiving mistress! Just when you think you have figured her out, she shows you a new side. Her wondrous facets keep you entangled.
At first, it’s about mastering technique. Then, it’s about grasping the basics of counting. Next, it’s about deciphering what’s left unsaid versus what’s heard. Soon, it becomes a game of psychology—reading your opponents, anticipating their moves. And then, it turns inward, challenging your stamina, resilience, focus, and attitude. Then it’s your partner. (The partner aspect could fill a whole book—The Bridge Jane Diaries). The cycle of "then" keeps turning.
My first introduction to bridge was when I had a six-month-old baby. I would steal away from home every night at 9:00 pm for ten wonderful sessions. I was hooked. But the pressures of motherhood overwhelmed me, and it still wasn’t an easy contest. I forgot about bridge for eight years. But I couldn’t evade the bait any longer. My local club was once again offering bridge lessons for newcomers..
It’s been five years since then. COVID-19 came, and bridge for me was really a bridge over troubled waters. BBO was my vaccine. My relationship with bridge has been tumultuous. A well-declared board gives a high that can only be beaten by a well-defended board. But the lows! The self-goals! The errors! The lack of application! The heartbreak!
It is a question of weighing the highs vs. the lows. But all that is only idle thought for a rational mind, as my addicted, irrational mind turns again for the next hit on BBO. HELP!

Good luck for BFAME championship …
Bridge is no less than a baby. Actually, more. A baby leaves the home when she grows up; bridge never leaves your heart..
Every good wish at BFAME and Bermuda Bowl
Thank you
Priya, I couldn't have articulated the feelings we have with this game any better! This cruel but addictive game parallels the game of golf in that there are many parts of the game that you must master and when you hit that shot or make that small slam it doesn't matter how many times you played poorly, it's those few times in between that you relish and remember that pulls you back in time and time again. I am terrible at Bridge but for some reason, I am addicted to wanting to learn more and improve!!
You can check out but you can never leave ☺️

I like your quote, ‘bridge over troubled waters’ because bridge needs concentration. But do have fun and laugh at your partner’s and your mistakes. When opposition make mistakes smile quietly with no comments. Good Luck,
Yes it’s important to have fun- agree completely
