The Bridge to Marriage

A Story from Milly/PlayTime4

Fifty-two years ago today was a Sunday afternoon which found me playing Party Bridge with other singles who not only enjoyed the game but the social aspects of it as well. At age 33 in 1972, any husband prospects looked quite dim while travel, my teaching profession, taking guitar lessons, and Bridge friends kept me happily busy.

Buzzing back to my apartment in my new little Audi to practice guitar for Monday’s lesson, one of my fellow bridge players sauntered over to my carport to inquire if I might like to go for a glass of wine. We had never been partners at any of the sessions so my immediate reaction was to decline saying I needed the evening to get ready for Monday. He continued to “chat me up” with intermittent queries about that glass of wine. Finally deciding that he sounded interesting enough to invest an hour or so, we went to the local Jolly Roger on the bay where, yes indeed, he turned out to be so interesting that we closed the lounge and became almost attached at the hip for the next year and a half.

Fast forward to 1974. One of my good friends was living in England temporarily and invited me to visit them during summer break. By this time, thinking our relationship was simply a Bridge to Nowhere, I said good-bye intending to move on upon my return. Somehow, my ‘ex’ managed to meet my flight with Olivia Newton John’s new release album entitled, “I Love You, I Honestly Love You”, feelings he had never uttered until that moment. We were married 10 days later and celebrated our Golden Anniversary last August 11, 2024.

We had a chance to thank Olivia Newton John for “A Love Story” emanating from that album when she did a concert on my birthday in 2016. Of ALL the requests for her signature, she only signed 2 items…the Mayor’s album and ours with the following inscription: To Milly & Gary, Happy 42nd – What a beautiful story! Love & Light, Olivia. We’ve continued to enjoy playing bridge and have crossed a lot of bridges together over the years, but the BEST one was that Sunday afternoon game of Bridge which brought us together.

Don't hesitate to share a sweet message for your special someone, or share your story if you were lucky enough to find the love of your life on BBO 💕

  1. I would love to participate in the free program on this day, Valentine's Day, playing bridge with someone else. I am in Chapala, Mexico, and am from the US. Please inform me if you want me to be a partner for someone. I will be available between noon and 5 pm my time. I am also happy to just watch the match in hopes of becoming a better player than I am currently!
Have a wonderful day and good luck with your games.

  2. Hi. We'd like to use the Valentine's Day 10 board match as a teaching opportunity. Will the regular BBO History feature work to let us discuss the hands afterwards? Thanks.

    1. Congratulations Milly and Gary! I loved your story!
Bridge should be taught in all schools, a very useful tool in life, no matter where you are.
      I am from Argentina.

  4. Where exactly does the Valentines Pairs take place?

10am Eastern Time (16:00 CET): Pairs, Matchpoints, 10 boards, 2 boards per round

    1. it will be inside Special Events or Competitive > Free Tournaments area - but it will be available only 24 hours before the game starts 🙂

    1. Enter valentine to find the tournament under Competitive and sign up like you would for any tournament. Buon divertimento.
