The Birth of BIL
On September 3rd, 2003, BIL – "Beginner and Intermediate Lounge" – came to life thanks to founder Maureen Halls's tenacity. What started as a private club swiftly transformed into a global movement. The BIL became more than just a club; it became a lifeline for players seeking camaraderie, mentorship, and the joy of bridge.
BILies: A Name, A Community, A Retreat
As BIL flourished, its members affectionately coined a name themselves "BILies." They're more than just players; they're a close-knit family connected by their love for bridge. Maureen's brainchild, the BILies Retreat, a public club for open teaching, special events and where you can socialize even with non BIL friends.
A BBO Points Tournament
On Sunday, September 3rd at 16:00 ET, join us in celebrating BIL's 20th anniversary with an exciting event on BBO. A special tournament will be the highlight, where players – both experienced and new – can jump in for some bridge action. It's not just about the game; it's about testing skills, making friends, and keeping the BIL spirit alive!
Maureen's Dedication
From managing the club to extending support to players in 125 countries, she spent countless hours into nurturing the BIL community. Her original goal of playing bridge might have taken a backseat, but her legacy of fostering growth and friendship prevailed. Maureen wants all members to benefit whether they are members for a short or long term
Maureen's journey isn't just a story of a club's success. Through BIL, players transitioned to advanced levels, becoming accredited teachers, directors, and even represented their countries on the international stage. Through her dedication, Maureen has shown that bridge is about people, connection, and growth. Her wish is for all members to become skilled players and, above all, good partners. Her philosophy: "Cherish Your Partner; Respect Your Opposition." resonate in all BILies members
