Wrong hand - Jerome and Leo

Wrong hand - Jerome and Leo

Each of the suggested North hands has either twelve or fourteen cards. It’s up to you to choose among the three suggested cards which is the one that must be added or taken away so that the hand justifies the given auction.
Correct answers to level 1 questions are worth 4 points, those at level 2 give 6 points.

Level 1

Question 1

Twelve cards

Correct Answer:

 b) 8

In this sequence, the jump to 3 shows six or seven beautiful Diamonds with a hand in the range of 15-17HCP. With the Ace of Clubs or the Queen of Diamonds, the hand would be too strong and it would be necessary to show a false two-suiter by way of a jump (or even open a strong 2♣ with seven Diamonds and 18 points). With the 8 of Diamonds, we’ll have a maximum hand with the seventh Diamond but this will allow Dad not to have the minimum of his bid for once!

Question 2

Fourteen cards

Correct Answer:

b) Q

The 2 bid is a simple preference between Hearts and Clubs. It shows a minimum hand of 5 to 10 points with only two Hearts (and rarely a Heart fit with a very weak hand). Without the 2 of Hearts or the 10 of Clubs, it would be necessary to bid 2NT to suggest playing 3 No-Trump.

Question 3

Twelve cards

Correct Answer:

c) ♣J

The raise to 3♣ shows a hand with at least four Clubs and 8-11 points. It’s not forcing. With a stronger hand, one would have to go through fourth suit forcing before raising partner. Here, this bid would be perfect if you add the Club Jack. With the Ace of Hearts, we could bid 3NT and, with the King of Spades, fourth suit forcing with 2 would be mandatory to find out what the best game contract is, 4 Spades, 3 No-Trump or 5 Clubs.

Level 2

Question 1

Twelve cards

Correct Answer:

c) ♣J

In this competitive sequence, 2 shows a long suit but is non-forcing and therefore denies a Spade fit. If you add the Heart Ace, it would deserve a jump to 4. With a Spade fit (adding the Spade 10), we would hesitate between a pessimistic 2♠ and a Double followed by showing the fit (which Dad would certainly do as he never misses an opportunity to let his partner shine as declarer). With the Jack of Clubs, 10 points and a beautiful Heart suit, this is neither less nor more than what you need to bid 2.

Question 2

Fourteen cards

Correct Answer

c) Q

After an overcall and a new suit 2 over 1, opener’s fit at the lowest level is non-forcing, it therefore shows a minimum opening hand. Without the 3 of Hearts, we would bid 2NT and without the 6 of Spades, we would directly jump to 4 (a good maximum according to Dad’s opening criteria!). Without the Queen of Clubs, it is necessary to bid 3 , to show the Heart fit without imposing game in case partner bid 2 with only five cards and 10-11 points.

Question 3

Twelve cards

Correct Answer

b) 9

This sequence is more complicated. The 2 rebid guarantees at least five Diamonds while the 2 bid is third suit game forcing showing either four Hearts or a stopper in the suit. The 2♠ response (fourth suit by opener) is not very precise. It mainly shows that he has no natural bid at his disposal ‒ it therefore denies a Heart fit or a Spade stopper. You see, with the Jack of Spades, I would bid 2NT and with the Club 10 I’d choose 3♣. Here, not knowing where we should play, I will let Dad decide on the final contract, he loves it!

  1. Question 5 I don't think it has a proper answer. Without the club Queen I think it's not enough to open - 12HCP 4333, 12+4+3=19 not enough for 20-rule.

  2. Last Q3, it can be natural with SJ. 2 clubs does not deny 4 card S. South hand may he 4 spade, 4 heart and 5 clubs. Some may choose longer suit first
