To all the women who love bridge - your care, strength, and spirit shine brightly! You're the beating heart of our wonderful bridge playing community. 💐
This Mother’s Day, we’re inspired by Jane's beautiful story, about her and her mom's shared love for bridge, and how it's brought them ever closer together:
A Mother’s Love for Bridge by Jane Slezak (BBO: iBoesky)
My mom, Char Gangel, is 94 years old and has been an avid player for 80 years. She had begged me to learn Bridge since I was a little girl. Finally, I tried it in my 50s and, indeed, loved it. Through trial and error under her tutelage, I began to learn. When she was nearly 90, she phoned me excitedly, that I needed to read a certain page of the Bulletin. She recommended we incorporate a "new" thing she read about: responding to partner's 1NT opening with two 5-card majors. Imagine being 90 and being elated about adding a new convention!
When Covid arrived, she remained mostly housebound, and we played regularly together on BBO, thus maintaining her sanity.
We have played in several Regionals together, with two friends from our hometown of Nebraska City. From our first tourney together, we called ourselves the "Four Decade Team" because we were comprised of a player in her 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. (LOL, we're all in the next decade now.)
Char's proudest Bridge claim is that she has "replaced herself" two times: bringing me, her daughter, and Rose, her daughter-in-law, both into the great game of Bridge.

Jane's story reminds us of the joy of learning, the strength of family bonds, and the importance of staying connected through bridge. We hope this Mother’s Day brings you the same joy and love that bridge has brought to so many of us. 💐
We invite everyone to spread love and appreciation to the special people in your life. Share your heartfelt messages in the comments or send this card to the women who mean the most to you.

We played bridge w Char in Arizona. Miss her when she moved back to be w her children
My mom was a phenomenal bridge player but not too nice to others (Dad) or me. She gave me Autobridge which helped not at all! I finally learned the game from the local Adult Ed in my 30's and began to teach. It was so rewarding and a number of my students still play together! Anyway I vowed to spread my love of the game to my own children and this mother's day my daughter and son played with me and my fiance, winding down a perfect mother's day with friends and family.
I also play with my daughter & I am 93. I have taught her bridge through BBO & because she lives in Dallas & I live in Ct. ,it is our way of bonding. Irene Bermas
It’s wonderful to hear that, Irene! Wishing you and your daughter many more enjoyable games together. 🙂
