The Top Bidders for Set 2023-9

This proved to be a difficult set, with the most popular choice of the competition entrants failing to score a ‘10’ on any hand. The average score was 47.29 and selecting the most popular choice of competition entrants on every deal would have scored only 44/80. Nevertheless, two competitors produced perfect 80/80 sets to lead all-comers.

This month’s winners, with a score of 80/80 are:

Tezcan Sen (Tez) from Turkey and
John Rengstorff (Jtorff) from United States

John is an actor, writer and bridge teacher living in New York. He won the Mitchell Open B-A-M Teams in 1997 and now has three national wins to his name.  He says, “I was brought up in Madison, Wisconsin, and learned bridge in the UW Rathskeller.”

This turned out to be a tough set, so all scores of 67/80 or higher make the leader-board this month. Congratulations to everyone who makes the list.

The 2023 Annual Competition

Remarkably, we still have 14 players averaging 70/80 or higher after nine months. All but one of those 14 made it onto this month’s leader-board.

Dave and Vincent led the way with 78/80, meaning that Vincent consoliates his hold on fourth place and Dave moved ahead of Bob into second spot. Luwen inches ahead of Hanoi into fifth place, and Ian moves into a tie for sixth. The only other change in the Top 10 sees John moving ahead of Milko into tenth place. Jim Streisand from USA and Bartosz Kopras from Poland move up into the Top 20.

However, it now becomes tougher for those trying to hang onto those top places, as players start dropping their lowest scores. Alexander and John, plus a number of those just outside the Top 10 all have scores in the 50s to drop.

You currently need an average score of 60/80 or more to make the annual competition leader-board. Congratulations to everyone who makes the list, which represents around the top 115 bidders from amongst the many thousands who take part every month.

The first winners are all familiar names to those of us who play the challenge and keep an eye on the leader-boards.
