Best Bridge Memories

From the Sidelines

Story by Mike Gahan (BBO: Mike Gahan)

For many years, I drove my daughter Liz to bridge competitions, sat in the car or in the waiting area, and listened to her talk about hands, conventions and results. I nodded and smiled, but the truth is, I had no real idea what she was talking about. Bridge was her world, not mine. She had started playing the game very young, after volunteers from Solihull Bridge Club came into her school to teach the basics, sparking an interest that grew into a lifelong passion. By her early twenties, she was already a serious and accomplished player and the winner of the Young Player of the Year award. I was simply the proud parent on the sidelines.

Liz, Mike’s daughter

One moment that particularly sticks in my mind was when The Telegraph published one of her hands. I read it carefully, intrigued and proud, even though I didn’t understand a single word of the analysis. It only deepened the mystery of this game she loved so much.

Then came Covid. Suddenly, the competitions stopped, and we found ourselves at home with time on our hands. One day, Liz gently suggested I give the game a try. It felt almost backwards, an older man being taught by his daughter, who was still only in her twenties. Yet that unusual arrangement turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life.

With quiet patience and clear explanations, she guided me from complete beginner to a far stronger player. The kitchen table became our classroom. Slowly, the mysterious language I had overheard for years, and the hands I had once stared at blankly in the newspaper, began to make sense. The game that had always belonged to her became something we could share.

What started as a few lockdown lessons has completely transformed my retirement. Bridge has filled my days with purpose, mental challenge, new friendships and a sense of ongoing growth I had not expected at this stage of life. Every time I sit down at a table, I carry the lessons she first taught me.

Today, Liz represents England on the Under 26 Ladies team, an achievement that fills me with enormous pride. I still drive her to events sometimes, but now I understand the conversations. More than that, I am part of the same world she opened to me.

Thank you, Liz. You remain both my daughter and my mentor. The difference you have made in my game, and in my life, is lasting and profound. And thank you to Solihull Bridge Club, whose school visits first planted the seed that has grown into so much for our family.
