I was tayght 21+ OR 8/9 Playing Tricks
The ACBL is extremely diffident and publicity-shy. During the Culbertson-Lenz match, you could go into a speakeasy in Butte, Montana and people would be arguing about a bid Oswald Jacoby made. The ACBL was founded by anti-Culbertson people and has not changed its perspective much. We desperately need publicity and, as one commenter here pointed out, influencers. Look at what chess has been able to do despite the fact that Bobby Fischer virtually wrecked it in the United States with his antics. Sometimes we seem to act as though we are doing something shameful rather than interesting.
never heard from Briona
National bridge authorities can lay down rules for the requirements to describe a hand as strong.......but as far as I am aware there is nothing to stop anyone opening 2 clubs with a 9 card suit as long as its described as having playing strength but not necessarily defensive values. As to whether such a bid is wise is another issue
What happened to free Matchpoint practice hands? It’s gone! They will want us to pay now for anything. These things are generated automatically and at no cost to BBO. So disappointing! It’s all about $$$
Could you let us know which free Matchpoint practice hands you're referring to? There are still various free tournaments and practice opportunities on BBO, so we'd like to better understand what you're referring to. Thanks! 🙂
Director is wrong.
Hello Bridge Friends,
We need a young influencer to promote the game or a hit movielike "Crazy Rich Asians". ACBL would do well to pay an influencer to promote and play bridge. All the young men and women are learning Ma jong. Inspired by the movie.
We'd certainly love to see more younger players discover the game. 😊
100% AGREE
on the hand where we are defending 4hx, a trump lead seems to me automatic. i expect partner to have a trump honour and good spades with some sort of club holding. As it is, p does not stop clubs, but a trump lead is still (serendipitously) right. P when in plays a second trump (which dummy cannot win).and dummy is dead
the acbl is doing everything it can to end the game. no grandma is going to take her grandaughter to the computer to teach her bridge. bridge is a social activity. the acbl seems to not understand that.
Absolutely agree. All they care about is the online revenue and NABCs now. Clubs are dying a slow death and they refuse to address or even acknowledge it.
TOTALLY AGREE
hi Briona. Yesterday i picked up 8 top spades. Nine winners i opened 2clubs Giles the director ruled I could not open 2 clubs
What do u think>>>
My CC says 22+ HCP or 1 1/2 tricks short of a game + defense. NEVER had a problem.

You can open whatever you want. The director is wrong. I don’t think it is a good bid. But thats not something a director has something to do with.
This is a common misconception. You cannot open whatever you want. That said, many directors have inaccurate information. The club director test is ridiculously easy.
The director at our club erroneously prohibits that too.
ACBL bridge is just social bridge, the laws are not followed.
ACBL Convention Charts state that a very strong 2C bid needs to contain any of the following criteria:
i. at least 20 HCP; or
ii. at least 14 HCP and is within one trick of game assuming suits break evenly among the other hands; or
iii. at least 5 Control Points and is within one trick of game assuming suits break evenly among the other hands.
The hand being referred to by Jack was AKQJT9532 - J43 6. Although only 1 trick from game, it still doesn't qualify the above criteria.
I guess the point of the criteria being that the bid needs to contain some form of defensive values, where this hand is purely preemptive.
