Robots are pretty handy in lots of everyday bridge situations. Maybe you just want to play a few quick hands when you don’t have a partner. Or you’re playing with your regular partner but still need opponents to fill the table. It’s also useful if something unexpected happens, like when a friend disconnects or has to leave. You don’t have to stop playing — just add a robot to take their seat and keep going.

When you play with GIB on BBO, you’re probably used to the default 2/1 system. One nice thing is that GIB now explains its bids, so you can see what it’s thinking when it bids or before you make your call. This helps you and your robot stay on the same page.

But have you ever tried using GIB with a different system?

If you subscribe to BBO+, you can take it further and choose which system your robots use. So when you bring them into your game, they’ll play the system you pick. Everyone knows what to expect, and it all feels more natural. BBO+ gives you three options for the Advanced GIB:

• 2/1: The Familiar Favorite
  This is the system our robots have always used, so if you’re comfortable with it, you can keep playing the way you always have.
• Precision: The Classic Choice
  Precision is a long-time favorite for players around the world. GIB plays traditional Precision, which is clear and easy to follow. Many players first learned bridge with this system.
• 5-Card Majors: Simplified and Natural
  This is a good choice if you like a straightforward, natural style. It keeps conventions to a minimum and makes for smooth, casual games without complicated agreements.

Playing bridge with the bidding system you know best really does make life easier.

If you’d like to practice a different system with your partner, or you just want your robot partner or opponents to match how you play, you can set that up too. This helps avoid classic mix-ups — like when you open 2♣ as a natural club and the robot thinks it’s a strong artificial bid, or the other way around.
