The Memphis Spring Nationals attracted 6493.5 tables, Mark Itabashi securing the Mott-Smith Trophy for earning the most masterpoints during the event. He won the Leventritt Silver Ribbon Pairs with Neil Silverman and the Senior Mixed Pairs with Laura Brill, and those victories, combined with excellent placings in the other events he contested gave him a total 319.86, leaving him well clear of second placed Kevin Rosenberg and third placed Zia Mahmood.

Man of Steel

On the final day the Jacoby Open Swiss Teams wen to Jiang Gu’s team, Leo Lasota, Alex Perlin and David Yang. They led from start to finish, ending up 12 VP ahead of Laurence Lebowitz, Adam Grossack, Agustin Madala, Dennis Bilde, and Ola and Mikael Rimstedt.

There was a thrilling finish to the Women’s Open Swiss Teams, Lynne Castoldi, Ann Karin Fuglestad, Cathy Baldysz and Sophia Baldyz squeezing home by 0.13 IMP ahead of Linda Lewis, Jenni Carmichael, Ljudmila Kamenova and Kristen Onsgard. The team was formed as the result of a chance encounter between Lynne and Ann Karin in an elevator at last year’s nationals in Louisville combined with a recommendation by mentor, Bill Cole, who suggested adding Cathy and Sophia
