A Journey Beyond Loss

Story by BBO: subrakv

In September 2013, I lost my wife to cancer. She was the pillar of our family and my partner for 42 years. Her passing was a great loss for me, and I fell into depression, staying mostly at home.

In mid-2014, one of my closest childhood friends, who happens to be an excellent bridge player, flew down from New Delhi to Hyderabad. He knew I was struggling to cope after my wife’s passing and wanted to help. He organized bridge classes for me, and thus, I began learning bridge for the first time at the age of 67.

The first year was very challenging, but slowly, my interest grew. During Indian summers, I used to travel to England. There, I befriended a gentleman named Mr. John Hind, a very skilled bridge player. I started visiting the Sutton Coldfield Bridge Club to play in tournaments. Since John was accustomed to playing Benji ACOL and I was a beginner in Strong Club, I decided to switch to Benji ACOL. I suppose I had beginner’s luck, as I performed quite well in the tournaments.

After returning to India, the world was hit by COVID-19, and we were all confined to our homes. I used that time to learn Standard 2/1 online.

Today, after the initial struggles, I have become a confident bridge player. This journey has shown me that one can learn new things at any age—for me, it was bridge. Not a day goes by without me participating in a tournament. It keeps my mind sharp, and I thoroughly enjoy it.

  5. This story rings true with me. My husband died because of covid and I was home after a wonderful forty six year marriage. I saw a bridge class advertised at a local center. The ninety one year old teacher put her arm around me and told me, that bridge would save my life. She is now on her deathbed but her prediction was correct. Bridge keeps my brain busy bank has opened many social doors for me.
