We Were All Beginners Once

Story by Ross Maddock (BBO: Ross68)

As one of the “old guys” around here, I just wanted to share a few of my mediocre (but meaningful) experiences with this great game we all love.

First, a big thank you to BBO. I've been playing online since 2009, and honestly, without BBO especially during COVID I think many of us would have been pulling our hair out. Where else could we have played bridge with friends, robots, or in an IMP tournament… for free? Or chosen to pay and play at a sanctioned BBO or VACB site and maybe even pick up some Masterpoints if our skills (and a little luck) held up?

Although I’ve rarely had a regular partner on BBO, I still remember almost every player I’ve ever played with. I can usually recall where they’re from, when we played, and whether we placed in the top 3. If you're curious how I keep track, just ask — I’ll share my secret!

I’ve also helped quite a few friends get more comfortable with BBO. Whether they were nervous about joining a tournament or just wanted to try a casual game, I’ve been glad to support them. Along the way, I’ve made “Friends” on BBO with fellow club members and lots of new folks from clubs across Canada and the US. I’ve even connected with more than 30 hosts and directors from both countries while playing at their sites.

Sometimes people forget that bridge is a game meant to be enjoyed by everyone. Some see Duplicate Bridge as a bit more elite and sure, it can be competitive but we all started somewhere. Whether someone is just getting into the game or trying to find their footing somewhere between novice and expert, they deserve support, not discouragement. It’s up to all of us who love this game to make sure others have the chance to love it too.

Let’s keep making it worthwhile for ourselves, and for each other.
