We Were All Beginners Once

Story by Ross Maddock (BBO: Ross68)

As one of the “old guys” around here, I just wanted to share a few of my mediocre (but meaningful) experiences with this great game we all love.

First, a big thank you to BBO. I've been playing online since 2009, and honestly, without BBO especially during COVID I think many of us would have been pulling our hair out. Where else could we have played bridge with friends, robots, or in an IMP tournament… for free? Or chosen to pay and play at a sanctioned BBO or VACB site and maybe even pick up some Masterpoints if our skills (and a little luck) held up?

Although I’ve rarely had a regular partner on BBO, I still remember almost every player I’ve ever played with. I can usually recall where they’re from, when we played, and whether we placed in the top 3. If you're curious how I keep track, just ask — I’ll share my secret!

I’ve also helped quite a few friends get more comfortable with BBO. Whether they were nervous about joining a tournament or just wanted to try a casual game, I’ve been glad to support them. Along the way, I’ve made “Friends” on BBO with fellow club members and lots of new folks from clubs across Canada and the US. I’ve even connected with more than 30 hosts and directors from both countries while playing at their sites.

Sometimes people forget that bridge is a game meant to be enjoyed by everyone. Some see Duplicate Bridge as a bit more elite and sure, it can be competitive but we all started somewhere. Whether someone is just getting into the game or trying to find their footing somewhere between novice and expert, they deserve support, not discouragement. It’s up to all of us who love this game to make sure others have the chance to love it too.

Let’s keep making it worthwhile for ourselves, and for each other.

  1. I partnered with Ross for a few years face to face and he always supported me even though I didn't know how to play or bid very well. I don't think we ever had a discouraging remark towards each other. It was a great introduction to duplicate bridge. Thanks Ross.

  3. A very useful assessment about our wonderful game. Certainly, many players appear to have no memory of what it was like when they first sat at a bridge table.I remember. I was HORRIBLE. But I learned and became a decent player who has always helped out beginnersç

      1. Call for the director, always whether F2F or on line. It’s Better than confronting the offender. The zero tolerance policy is real.

  4. What a wonderful article to read and take to heart.
I have very much enjoyed playing bridge with Ross when he is available and reading this article will make it even more pleasurable.
I also enjoyed reading the many nice comments about Ross and his article.
His kind and thoughtful words will be on my mind the next time we connect.

  5. Such a nice message Ross. Your good message of being patient and helping others may as well go beyond the bridge table as well.
Let’s continue enjoying this good game, here in - thanks to - BBO.

  6. Thank you for sharing your wonderful story! May your trump always break and you continue to have fun with this amazing game!

  7. Hello. I am not a very good player. Sometimes good players kick me off. How do I get partners that are not advanced bridge players on BBO?

  8. Mr. Maddock-
Reading your story was awesome. It is nice to know that there are still kind and gentle people in the world.
Thank you so very much for sharing.
    Blessings,

  9. BBO is a great friend in need when a lot of time is available and no worthwhile chore needs to be done.

Playing in person offers more satisfaction, enjoyment, and skill honing through discussions and learning from others.

Yes, I agree, everyone is a beginner sometimes. Some of us progress quickly, others progress slowly to a higher level. An important thing to remember is to ensure that the other three players do not feel they are being taken advantage of and are wasting their time.

Bridge is a great game that helps save you from dementia for a long time and keeps your thinking sharp!

    1. I think you are assuming free time
has to exist first. I make free time
to play the game. I learned to play at college. We would pass around a book that described opening bids only. If partner opened there was no guidance. Now couples play with a sheet that gives point ranges for responding. Helpful but after a bit you begin to use what works for you.

  10. So much the Right Attitude. Hugh potential here for the wonderful BBO SYSTEM and philosophy.Let those of us with such a Mindset plough forth together with Joy,Respect and FUN
    THANK YOU BBO.

  11. Thank you Ross for your wieland true words. our beautiful game must always be encouraged to all peghy
