In this episode, we’re joined by Professor Sam Punch, a Scottish international bridge player, sociologist, and the force behind the Bridge and Mind Sport for All (BAMSA) project at University of Stirling, Scotland.
Sam shares how she started playing bridge about 10 years ago, and how her passion for the game led her to explore its human and emotional side through academic research. She talks about interviewing world class bridge players, writing insightful books, and why she believes bridge should be recognized as a sport, not just a leisure activity.
She also shares her experience playing for Scotland (even though she’s originally from England!), her love of Board-A-Match (BAM) format, and what it’s like playing Acol with Steve in this episode.
🎥 Watch as Sam tackles a challenging 6NT, discusses the dynamics of partnerships, and offers a look into her current research on bringing bridge into schools across four countries.

P.S. This video was recorded the week before the SBU Congress in Peebles, where Steve and Sam plan to meet in person.
