My parents learned to play bridge in college and were members of groups here in Pittsburgh. They wanted to be able to play at home, so when I was eight and my sister 11 they taught us to play. When I was in high school, I would play with three of my friends at people's homes. This continued during college when were at home on break. We had all gone to Allegheny College.
There was also a duplicate game at Allegheny. My senior project advisor directed the game. We had a mix of faculty and students and had a lot of fun. After completing my doctorate at Notre Dame, I was hired to teach mathematics at Duquesne University. The brother of the director of the game at Allegheny was the director of the game at Duquesne! Eventually I took over that role. That game was eventually discontinued, as was the game at Allegheny.
About fifteen years ago some friends at our athletic club wanted to learn to play. My parents and I taught a few people. Eventually we started a duplicate game that I direct. The club closed and we eventually relocated to the Monroeville Senior Center where our game is going strong. Though not sanctioned, we have had as many as seven tables recently. We are like a family. What a great group of people!
My life would be so much poorer without the friends I have made playing bridge! And no game can even come close!

George neglected to say that a few years back he became a certified director, but he prefers our non-sanctioned games. It’s an indication of his wonderful nature in which learning and fun trump competition.
